How theta is created
The two short inner options generally lose time value faster in total than the cheaper long wings, producing positive net theta. The effect depends on moneyness and the exact four-leg structure.
The center of the range
Theta is typically most useful when both short options remain OTM and the position is not threatened. Daily decay estimates assume other inputs stay constant, which real markets do not do.
Near a boundary
As price approaches a short strike, negative gamma and directional delta can overwhelm accumulated decay. A high theta number can accompany a position that is already carrying substantial loss risk.
Expiration tradeoff
Theta may accelerate late in the cycle, but so do gamma, assignment and execution risks. Compare remaining credit with potential reversal loss rather than holding automatically for every dollar.
A practical example
A condor earns an estimated $9 from one day of theta but loses $70 from an adverse move and IV expansion. Positive theta describes only one component of total P&L.
