Building the hedge
Add signed vega across every leg and adjust contract ratios until the total is near zero. Because expirations and strikes respond differently, a zero sum assumes a particular pattern of volatility changes.
Why neutrality drifts
Vega changes as price, time and IV change. Different points on the volatility surface rarely move in perfect parallel, so a position neutral to a broad IV shift can still lose from skew or term-structure movement.
Risks that remain
Delta, gamma, theta, jump risk, assignment, liquidity and transaction costs remain active. Rebalancing can reduce one exposure while increasing another, making a complete scenario analysis essential.
A practical example
A trader owns $40 of position vega and sells contracts contributing -$39. Net vega is near +$1 for a parallel one-point shift, but unequal expirations can still reprice differently after an event.
